- Hire-car companies in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire routinely ask for an IDP with your licence, and many rentals come with a local driver.
- Police checkpoints are frequent and can be poorly marked — official UK advice is to stay in the vehicle and show documents through a closed window.
- Avoid night driving; roads are unlit and conditions deteriorate quickly outside the main cities, especially in the November–May wet season.
