- Full, valid original driving licence from your home country — photocopies are not accepted
- Non-EU/EEA visitors may drive for up to 12 months; EU/EEA licences are valid for as long as they remain current
- IDP (1949 Geneva convention) or a certified translation is recommended if your licence is not in English
- Rental firms typically require the licence to have been held for at least 1-2 years, with minimum ages around 21-25 and young-driver surcharges

Reisewarnungen
- Irish rental desks rarely ask EU, UK, US, Canadian or Australian licence holders for an IDP, but drivers with non-Latin-script licences (e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Arabic) should carry one alongside the original licence
- Most Irish rental cars are manual transmission — automatics cost more and sell out early in summer
- Many US credit-card collision damage waiver (CDW) programmes specifically exclude Ireland, so budget for the rental company's own insurance
