- Rentals are concentrated in Bishkek (and Osh) and dominated by local and 4x4-specialist agencies rather than the big global chains; desks want your original licence and an IDP smooths both rental and roadside checks.
- Police stop drivers regularly — pay any fine only through official channels, never cash to the officer; fake-police scams targeting foreigners are reported.
- Kyrgyzstan has no vignette or low-emission-zone schemes; the real hazards are unlit, patchily maintained roads, mountain passes and winter snow closures outside Bishkek.
