Namibia is party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and recognises the International Driving Permit. Visitors may drive on a full valid home licence; an IDP is required if that licence is not in English.

Requisitos Principales
- Carry your original full home-country driving licence with you in the vehicle whenever you drive
- An IDP is required if your licence is not in English; it is valid for one year from issue and is only valid together with your national licence
- Minimum age 18 to hold an IDP; rental companies commonly require drivers to be 23 or older with at least a year's driving experience, and some set the minimum at 25
- Take out comprehensive insurance - the UK FCDO warns that most policies will not cover accidents that do not involve another vehicle or an animal

- Rental companies generally ask to see the original licence and a passport, and usually want a credit card in the main driver's name - confirm the exact documents with your supplier before you fly. Carrying an IDP avoids any argument at the desk even if your licence is already in English.
- Traffic drives on the left. Gravel and dirt roads are widespread outside the main tarred routes and the UK FCDO warns that accidents on them are common, advising drivers not to exceed 80 km/h and to check road conditions before setting off.
- If you plan to drive a foreign-registered vehicle into Namibia rather than hiring locally, check border formalities and any cross-border charges with the Namibian authorities before travelling; locally hired Namibian-registered cars are not affected.
