Exigences Principales
- Your original national driving licence, carried whenever you drive — the UK Foreign Office advises you may need to show it at police checkpoints
- An International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried together with your home licence rather than in place of it
- Minimum age 18 for a motor vehicle whose gross vehicle mass does not exceed 3,500 kg, under section 21(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Act; car hire firms may set higher age and experience minimums of their own
- Third-party motor insurance, which Part XIV of the Road Traffic Act makes compulsory for using a motor vehicle on a public road

- Car hire companies are based in Lilongwe and Blantyre, with desks at the airports, and Malawi's tourism board says cars can be delivered to and collected from other locations
- Fuel supply is unreliable: the UK Foreign Office reports frequent shortages and long queues, and advises not to assume fuel will be available on your route
- Avoid travelling after dark. The FCDO notes that potholes, animals, abandoned vehicles, cyclists and vehicles driving at night without lights can all cause serious accidents
