Exigences Principales
- Original driving licence from your home country (a certified English translation if the licence is not in English)
- International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention
- Sri Lankan recognition permit or temporary driving licence — obtained at the airport permit counter, the Automobile Association of Ceylon in Colombo, or the Department of Motor Traffic
- Minimum driving age is 18; rental companies generally set higher age thresholds

- An IDP alone is not enough in Sri Lanka — rental firms and police expect the local endorsement, so arrange the recognition permit before collecting a car or tuk-tuk (UK guidance: bring your licence, IDP and two passport photos to AA Ceylon).
- Book with rental companies registered with the Sri Lankan tourism authorities and confirm insurance and roadworthiness before driving off.
- Traffic drives on the left and conditions outside the main cities can be poor, so many visitors hire a car with a driver instead of self-driving.
