Do you need an IDP to drive in Belize?
Belize has not ratified either UN road-traffic convention, and it is one of the easiest countries in Central America for foreign drivers. The Belize Police Department confirms that visitors may drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 90 days; after that, you must obtain a Belizean licence. Because Belize's official language is English, licences from the US, UK, Canada and other English-speaking countries are accepted as-is. If your licence is issued in another language, carry a 1949-format IDP alongside it — it is the standard translation police and rental desks expect, and it smooths any roadside check.
At the rental desk the picture matches the law: international agencies such as Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty operate alongside local firms, and an English-language licence plus a credit card is normally all you need. Agencies may still request an IDP for non-English licences or premium 4x4 bookings. Despite its British colonial history, Belize drives on the RIGHT, road signs are in English, distances are posted in miles and fuel is sold by the gallon — familiar territory for North American drivers. Police checkpoints are routine, so keep your documents handy.
Local rules are straightforward but conditions demand care. Speed limits run 55 mph on the highways and 25–40 mph through towns and villages, the blood-alcohol limit is 0.08%, seat belts are compulsory for front-seat occupants, and phone use is illegal unless hands-free. The UK Foreign Office warns that driving can be hazardous in the rainy season, with potholes, poor lighting and unlit vehicles; unmarked speed bumps guard most village entrances, and a 4WD is advised for unpaved routes like Mountain Pine Ridge.

Belize is not a contracting party to the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, so no treaty obliges it to recognise an International Driving Permit. That does not automatically make an IDP useless: rental companies and police often ask for a readable translation of a foreign license, and many drivers carry one for exactly that reason.
